A Tree-Mendous Tale
Dancing Queen

A strange sound awakened Chipper the squirrel early one fall morning. "What could that be?" wondered Chipper. As Chipper dashed from his home in the tree, he saw and amazing sight.

Outside he saw a golden mist and in the mist he saw a unicorn. The unicorn was so beautiful; its horn looked like crystal and sparkled like diamonds. Chipper knew that unicorns were magical creatures and that anything could happen when one was around. He still wanted to pet the unicorn, even though he was a little afraid.

Slowly, Chipper walked up to the unicorn and reached out to touch it. As soon as he did, the strangest thing happened. Chipper heard a voice in his head. "Thank you for coming when I called. I need your help."

Chipper was so surprised that he jumped back a few steps and almost turned and ran back into his home in the tree. He looked at the unicorn’s crystal blue eyes and they pulled him back toward the unicorn. When he touched the unicorn again, the voice spoke inside his head again. "Please don’t run away. I need your help."

Chipper was still a little surprised. "Did you talk to me just now?" he asked looking into the unicorn’s eyes again.

"Yes," the unicorn answered. "My name is Marcella. My mistress is trapped in an evil wizard’s tower on the other side of the forest. I have been watching the tower for a long time. The wizard has gone away for a while and this is my chance to rescue her, but I can’t get into the tower. Will you help me?"

"Of course," Chipper answered. "Let’s go." He hopped up onto a branch and onto Marcella’s back.

They ran back through the forest to the wizard’s tower and on the way they worked out their plan. First they would make sure that the wizard was still gone. Then Chipper would sneak in, find the princess, and try to get her out. Once they were out of the tower, Marcella would be able to get them away.

Everything looked okay when they got to the tower. The wizard was not back from wherever he had gone. "Go on inside and find the princess," Marcella told Chipper. She will know to follow you. I will tell her."

"Okay," Chipper said and hopped off her back and squeezed under the big heavy door into the tower.

It was dark and gloomy inside and Chipper was afraid that the wizard would come back and find him, but he had promised to help save the princess. He looked around and saw the stairs going up to the tower room where Marcella said the princess was being kept. He started to climb up the stone steps, but he got tired. It was much easier for squirrels to climb trees than stone, but he kept going. Finally he got to the top of the stairs and saw three doors. All of them were locked. He didn’t know which room the princess was in so he started scratching at each door. There was not enough room for him under the doors to squeeze through to look for the princess, but Marcella said she would tell the princess that he was coming. If she heard him she could help him find her.

At the first two doors nothing happened, but at the third door Chipper heard the princess’s muffled voice. "Here I am! Help. Help me get away from here."

Chipper didn’t know what to do. "I’m so little," he thought to himself. "How can I get her out of there?" He looked around and saw a chair next to the wall. Higher up on the wall there was a big nail and on the nail there was a big ring of keys. "I have to get those keys," he said to himself.

He ran over to the chair and jumped onto it. He climbed up to the back of the chair and stretched as high as he could, but the keys were just out of reach. He couldn’t knock them off the nail. "I need something to knock the keys down with," he said and looked around for something. On a table not far away, he saw a thin black stick that he thought he could lift. "That’s just what I need."

Chipper jumped off the chair and ran to the table to get the stick.

"Hurry. Please hurry," he heard the princess say through the door. He grabbed the stick in his paws and dragged it back to the chair. At first, he could not get the stick up onto the chair, but then he put it into his mouth and pulled himself up with his paws. When he was up on top of the chair again, he used the stick to knock the keys off the wall with a loud clunk.

Chipper jumped off the chair and dragged the keys to the door where the princess was. He couldn’t fit under the door, but the keys could. He pushed them through until the princess could reach them. She pulled the keys into the room and quickly unlocked the door.

She looked down at Chipper and smiled. "Thank you for coming to help me, but we have to hurry. The wizard will be back soon and we have to be far away before he gets back." She picked Chipper up and ran down the stairs to the door where Marcella was waiting.

When the princess was holding Chipper, he could hear Marcella too. "Climb onto my back. I can feel the wizard coming."

The princess climbed onto Marcella’s back holding Chipper tightly, but just then the wizard appeared in a black cloud of smoke. "You can’t escape from me so easily," he shouted.

Marcella stared at the wizard and her crystal horn started to glow. All of a sudden a golden mist surrounded them. When the mist cleared, they were standing in front of Chipper’s tree. "Thank you for helping me, Chipper," Marcella said as the princess climbed off her back.

"Yes, thank you, Chipper, for being so brave. Even the littlest creatures can help fight evil," the princess told him. "We won’t ever forget you."

The princess climbed back onto Marcella’s back and the golden mist surrounded them. When it disappeared, Chipper was alone, but he was holding something in his paws. He looked down and saw a beautiful crystal. From far away, he could hear the princess’s voice. "If you ever need help, look into the crystal and call us and we will come to you."

Chipper took the crystal back into his tree home and kept it forever to remind himself when a little squirrel had saved a princess.
